A few words on the inventivness of people from Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland seems to be a country which breeds inventive people. Perhaps its the environment which appeals to peoples inventiveness. Or maybe it is simply in the genes. Either way many great inventions originated in Northern Ireland - In 1903, Belfast's Sirocco Works were involved in inventing air conditioning and the Royal Victoria Hospital became the first building in the world fitted with it Milk of Magnesia was invented in Belfast by Sir James Murray in 1871. The pneumatic tyre was invented in Belfast by John Boyd Dunlop in 1887. In 1936, a man by the name of Harry Ferguson, from County Down invented the tractor London's Sloane Square and Sloanies are named after County Down - born and Belfast educated Sir Hans Sloane, the man largely responsible for the formula for chocolate bars. in 1957 Shorts Aircraft Factory pioneered Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) with the SC-1aircraft. In the 1924, Sir James Martin invented the aircraft ejector seat. Jack Willis, invented the Willis immersion heater in Belfast.
In 1965, Professor Sir Frank Pantridge invented the portable defibrillator, which saves thousands of lives each year.
